  1. This tool allows you to search and view digitised historical photographs of the UK and Ireland. Starting with the Dixon-Scott collection, which holds more than 14,000 photographs taken in the 1920s-1940s, we will be adding new photographic resources in time. You can search by location and view images for free.

  2. Over 60,000 aerial photographs of Britain 1919-1953 which are free to download. Once you've registered you can also add comments.

  3. This site has a wonderful collection of photographs submitted by users. Its aim is to collect photographs for every square kilometre of Great Britain and Ireland and there are already over 2 million images available. Search by place and you can then refine the search by adding keywords. This is a great resource for images of churches, old houses and more.

  4. This site has user-submitted historical photographs overlaid onto modern images from Street View. There are no images for Australia or New Zealand at this stage.

  5. In 1986 the BBC launched a project to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the original Domesday Book. This project involved members of the public submitting pictures, maps and stories to compile a digital snapshot of Britain. There were technical difficulties with the project and it has now been made available online as Domesday reloaded.

  6. This site has a collection of historic photographs submitted by users around the world with the stories behind them. Old photographs can also be viewed overlaid on Streetview so you can compare the old with the new.

  7. This site offers combined searching of a range of databases - some free and some subscription sites. It includes London Lives, Origins.net, Proceedings of the Old Bailey, British History Online, British Museum Images, Charles Booth Archive, Clergy of the Church of England Database, House of Commons Parliamentary Papers and more.
