  7. This site has a combined online catalogue for more than 50 archives in Scotland. Digital content is also available in the Virtual Vault including a database of passengers who emigrated from western Scotland to Australia 1852-1857.

  14. The Great Britain Family Names Profiling website has surname distribution maps for Great Britain in 1881 and 1998.
  15. Database of over 160,000 UK place names many of which are also linked to maps.
  16. Search for births, marriages and deaths in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. Indexes are incomplete but cover 1837-1996 (births), 1837-1900 (marriages) and 1862-2004 (deaths). Certificates can be ordered online.
  17. Part of the State Library of Tasmania's website. Includes digitised photographs and indexes to newspapers, government records, place names and more.
  18. Lots of lists including passenger lists, school rolls, directories, lighthouses and barmaids! Many relate to Wellington but other parts of New Zealand are also covered.
  19. Searchable database of the New York Times archives. Use advanced search to specify a particular date range. Archives are free for the period 1851-1922 and 1987 to the present.
  20. Website with information about the SS Asturias II which operated as a migrant ship 1946-1952. Includes photographs, passengers' stories and some passenger lists with more to be added later.
