  16. Between 1634 and 1662; 262 "marriagable young girls", were recruited to first sign a contract in France and then be given passage and a small dowry to become the wife of a Quebec settler. Some were sponsored by their church, a company associate or merchant. Others were of minor noble families; cousins or sisters of men already in the colony. This application provides a fully searchable placename index to the Valuation Revision Books (VAL/12/B) covering counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone between the years 1864 to 1933. In total, c.3,900 volumes were digitally captured, with over 440,000 images now available to view online.
    The digital application is searchable by Placename (City, County, Parish, Townland) or PRONI Reference. The cities of Londonderry and Belfast have been indexed to Street and Ward level. Streets can be found by using the free text search.

  27. May 29, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Empress of Ireland near Sainte-Luce-sur-mer, Canada. Of the 1,477 people aboard, 1,012 perished in 14 minutes. The term “United Empire Loyalists” (often referred to as UEL) refers to the American colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution, and many of which fought for Britain during that conflict. They fled the United States and settled in what are now the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ontario. All the archives in these provinces hold records relating to Loyalists, some of which are searchable online.

  30. The RCN Archives contain some of the most important collections dedicated to the history of the nursing profession in the UK. Everyone is welcome to access this unique resource.
    The majority of records relate to the work and history of the Royal College of Nursing, and include images, recordings and objects. The RCN also holds collections from other nursing organisations and private individuals. These collections include badges, postcards, files and photographs. The RCN Archives also hold RCN library journal stock more than 25 years old.

  45. The National Library of Scotland has digitised the Ordnance Survey's six-inch to the mile maps for England and Wales. This is the most detailed topographical mapping covering all of England and Wales from the 1840s to the 1950s.   80. The Anglo Italian Family History Society offers a search facility for the Index of all the records that the Society's volunteers have transcribed. The Index contains approximately 600,000 names extracted from a miscellany of census, birth, baptism, marriage, and death records together with war, military, directories and occupational records. Most of the records are not available on commmercial genealogy sites. More are being added. The service is freely available to Members of the Society. The Society also produces an award-winning journal.

  82. The information was sourced from the nominal rolls of the New Zealand Contingents published in the Appendices to the House of Representatives. It contains the names, contingents, companies, registration numbers, ranks, embarkation details, addresses, next of kin and occupations of every New Zealand soldier who joined the New Zealand contingents that sailed to the South African War. Note that some New Zealand soldiers enlisted with British, Australian or South African forces and will therefore not appear on this database.

  91. Buckinghamshire - Victorian prisoners, maps, directories. Online database with details of prisoners entering the County Gaol in Aylesbury in the 1870s. The information has been taken from gaol receiving books held at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. Some entries may include photographs, whilst others just include basic details of the inmate's crime, and their punishment. Also trade directories indexed: 1792, 1798, 1811, 1824 and 1832.   94. The database has been constructed from records of the Toronto (Queen Street) Insane Asylum. Each record consists of the name of the inmate, the home residence of the inmate (ie District,county,town), and the age of the resident.
    The COMPLETE insane asylum records contain a wealth of information on your ancestor that will not be found in any other records available.
    Includes links to Hamilton Asylum, London Asylum Databases, Malden Asylum, and the Kingston Insane Asylum - all in Ontario.

  96. The Catholic National Library has over 70,000 books, pamphlets and periodicals including theology, spirituality and related subjects, biography, history (including Catholic Family History). There is a very useful online catalogue. Of particular interest to family historians is the collection of Mission Register transcripts (UK) dating back to 1694. People are mentioned in relation to court cases, land transactions, share ownership, etc. This includes access to Victorian Government Gazettes 1836-, Superior Courts of Tasmania (pre-1900) Case Notes 1824-1842, Law Reports (New South Wales) 1880-1900 and Tasmanian Law Reports 1897-1940, New South Wales Gazettes, and much more.
