The term “United Empire Loyalists” (often referred to as UEL) refers to the American colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolution, and many of which fought for Britain during that conflict. They fled the United States and settled in what are now the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Ontario. All the archives in these provinces hold records relating to Loyalists, some of which are searchable online.

  29. Searchable database of officer cadets who attended the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. Coverage dates for RMA Woolwich are 1790-1793, 1799-1805 and 1820-1939. Coverage dates for RMC Sandhurst are 1800-1946. There are also some staff registers. Brief details are given and the digitised image from the register can be downloaded for a small fee.

  67. This site has information on which parishes are covered by the 2nd edition of the British Isles Vital Records Index available on CD-ROM. This index has details of over 10 million christenings and nearly 2 million marriages in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. There are also some transcriptions for a few English counties; mostly gazetteer entries plus the Return of Owners of Land for Oxfordshire 1873.

  70. Between 1634 and 1662; 262 "marriagable young girls", were recruited to first sign a contract in France and then be given passage and a small dowry to become the wife of a Quebec settler. Some were sponsored by their church, a company associate or merchant. Others were of minor noble families; cousins or sisters of men already in the colony.
